Biiiiiig Weekend in Carlisle 2011

Another mighty fine BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend is over. I had a great time in Carlisle. I arrived listening to Wild Beasts beautiful new Smother album, mouth wide open as the train rolled through the stunning Cumbria hills. Then it got messy. It was great to see Annie Mac do her show live from the community centre in nearby Longtown; Friends Electric sounded sweet on Annie’s playlist. It was great to see them and Masters in France representing on the BBC Introducing Stage over the weekend. Both played sets which sounded massive, obvious to all that these are two bands who’ve worked hard to get where they are. Yaaks and Let’s Buy Happiness put in great performances too, which you can see through the link on the title of this post.
I enjoyed seeing Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga playing too; two artists I’d never normally go and see. Pint-sized Mars has the cheesy love pop ballad nailed; Nothin on You and Just the Way You Are come covered in disgusting pop wrapping, and I love it. Gaga did the hits, sang some jazz on a piano, rolled about on said piano, played piano with her heels, and changed her costume a lot. It was pretty pretty thrilling. And I saw her kinickers, which was uncalled for, but true.
Two Door Cinema Club and Noah and the Whale stepped up and played great sets over the weekend, and I heard nothing but great things about Pulled Apart by Horses and Joy Formidable who made themselves very at home on the In New Music We Trust stage. Quite right too.
I hadn’t seen Magentic Man, and they proved to be the highlight for me; Skream, Artwork and Benga properly ripping it up with help from the unstoppable Katy B (a delight to watch onstage, properly loving the energy from the crowd) and the brilliant P Money. Let’s hope this new Magnetic Man collaboration brings him to a wider audience.
Thanks Carlisle!
