Newcastle New Bands

Grandfather Birds, with birds

Newcastle, Monday night. The Other Rooms. Paul Mullen from Young Legionnaire and Mick from Frankie & the Heartstrings, both having just been on tour, both watching bands on their nights off. The venue is packed, and Generator, the music initiative in the north east of England and myself have put on a brilliant line up. Three Newcastle bands who have a strong local following but are about to take it further.
Grandfather Birds make strong, simple songs that are confident and striking. Their style is serious but believe, reminding me of Interpol without the unnecessary pomp. They're impressive.

Mammal Club are a fuller sounding band, keen on melody and layering of sounds that is exciting and effective. Like Frankie from the Heartstrings and Barry Futurehead, they have a frontman who isn't shy and looks and sounds like he's on a mission, like he's born to do this.

Headliners Let's Buy Happiness play brilliantly. Their songs are lingering and beautiful, a classic dose of indie guitar with a elegant and masterful sheen that breathes. It sounds great, and closes a fantastic showcase of music.

Big ups to Joe and all at Generator, a music initiative that, like many of its counterparts across Britain, is a vital and important nurturer of talent.
