I saw Soko play a few years back at the Eurosonic festival in Groningen, the Netherlands. Her off-kilter, sometimes funny, sometimes sad songs were simple and weird, and she was a refreshing change from a lot of the other trying too hard bands you tend to see at festivals like Eurosonic. I even went to see her in Amsterdam the following night, me and my girlfriend in a crammed and boiling Paradiso club watching her being brilliant again. Then she disappeared for a bit and said she quit music, but now she’s back with an album called ‘I Thought I Was an Alien’. It has some stunning moments on it, at times so close up and personal it’s unnerving. Makes a change from the Lana Del Ray album I’ve just listened to, and although perfectly pleasant and featuring some catchy numbers, left me feeling annoyed and as if I’d had a sugar overdose that I really didn’t need.
